Women’s Basketball Tips Off 2021-22 Campaign on Tuesday Night

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The 41st Division I season of the Fairfield University Women's Basketball program will officially begin as the Stags tip-off their season opener on Tuesday night against Brown at Webster Bank Arena at 7pm.

This will be the first of 13 home games the Stags will compete in at Webster Bank Arena as construction for their new Convocation Center is still ongoing with an estimated completion date late in 2022. The Stags have played 108 prior games inside the arena as they hold an even 54-54 record and a 21-17 mark under Head Coach Joe Frager in the building.

The 2021-22 campaign will also mark the 15th and final season for Coach Frager on the Stags' sideline as he has announced his retirement after the completion of the season, citing health reasons. Frager brings a 240-184 Fairfield record coming into the season. That impressive mark also includes a 160-96 record against MAAC foes and 13 conference winning seasons. In his 23 year head coaching career, Frager has amassed 429 victories and was named the 2007 D-II Bulleting National Coach of the Year following his National Championship run with Southern Connecticut State.

Frager will be helped by a plethora of returning players which includes four starters and 11 letterwinners from last year's third place finish. In total, the Stags return 79 percent of their scoring and 75 percent of their rebounding total.

Highlighted in the group of returners is Lou Lopez-Senechal, who was voted the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year for the second-straight season. The senior enters the season with 994 career points, just six shy of becoming the 32nd career Stag to reach 1000 career points.

Lopez-Senechal was joined by Andrea Hernangomez on the Preseason All-MAAC teams as the reigning MAAC Sixth Player of the Year was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Third Team.

The Stags and the Bears will be opening up a season for the third time in program history. Brown will be playing their first game since 2020 after the Ivy League canceled all contests last season with the CoVid-19 pandemic. The Stags are 6-4 all-time against Brown but have dropped the last two in the series and are looking for their first win since 2012.

Fairfield is on the road for their next four contests, starting with a Sunday afternoon game at Rutgers at 2pm.
