STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Fairfield University field hockey team remained unbeaten in Northeast Conference (NEC) play with today's 3-0 win over Wagner College on the road. Freshman
Agustina Casteluchi tallied her first two collegiate goals in the game to pace the offense.
The Stags currently sit atop of the conference standings with a 4-0 record and won their third straight match all of which have been by shutout. Fairfield last surrendered a goal on October 3 at Lafayette in a 2-1 setback away from campus. The team entered the week ranked 11
th in the nation for shutouts per game and now has six shutouts in 14 games for a 0.43 mark.
Zoe Rosen earned the shutout as the Fairfield goalkeeper, her fifth complete shutout in addition to her one shared with Peyton Rahn. The graduate student made three saves today to lower her goals against average to 1.28 on the season. She has not allowed a goal in 191 minutes of play.
The two teams played each other tightly without allowing either to gain much of an advantage. The Stags began to put passes together late in the opening quarter which resulted in much better outcomes especially in the 12
th minute. Casteluchi collected a rebound in the middle of the circle and drove the ball past the goalkeeper to put Fairfield in the lead at 1-0. Wagner took a couple of shot in the first quarter but none required any goalkeeper intervention.
In the second quarter, Fairfield tested the Wagner defense with three more shots that were on target but all were turned away by goalkeeper Daisy Ruhle. Rosen picked up her first save of the match in the 20
th minute of the match, facing two shots in the quarter and four overall in the half.
Fairfield scored twice in the second half, finding the back of the cage in both the third and fourth quarters. In the 40
th minute, the Stags intercepted a pass around midfield and made a run toward the Wagner goal.
Emma Radebaugh fed Casteluchi with a pinpoint pass in the center of the circle and once again the freshman pushed a shot past the goalkeeper to double up the advantage.
In the fourth quarter,
Page Lowry stepped up inside the circle to score the team's final goal. Lowry found a loose ball about eight yards from goal, managed to control it and lift a shot into the far corner to finish off the scoring and give her team a three-goal lead.
Fairfield was highly-efficient offensively today with 10 shots, nine of which were on goal. Ruhle finished the afternoon with six saves for Wagner. The Seahawks also had 10 shots but only placed three on target.
The Stags will finish up the weekend on Sunday when they host Hofstra University for a 1 pm game at University Field. The game will be the first of two home games in a row for the Stags, their final two regular-season contests on campus.
