DELAND, Fla. – Justin Guerrera continued his hot Southern mid-week swing with a two run double in the first and a RBI triple in the seventh, as the Fairfield University Baseball team took down host Stetson 7-4 on Wednesday.
Eli Oliphant secured the pitching with four innings of one-hit shutout relief in picking up his first victory of 2020.
Guerrera's two-run double in the first inning capped off a strong start for the Stags as
Mike Becchetti and
Mike Handal both singled to lead off the game.
The Stags manufactured a run in their next frame after
Mike Caruso led off with a single and would eventually advance to third on a Becchetti sacrifice bunt. Handal drove in Caruso with a sacrifice fly to right to put the Stags up 3-0.
Stetson, who fell to 11-4, would tie the game in the third on a Jon Meola RBI double. Oliphant would come in relief and shutdown Stetson's offense for the next four innings. He allowed just one hit and one walk in four shutout innings.
The Stags was able to get Oliphant a win for his impressive work as
Giacomo Brancato recorded a RBI single in the fifth and Guerrera tripled home a run in the seventh.
Dan Ryan added to Fairfield's scoring with a sacrifice fly, driving in Guerrera.
The Hatters got a run back in the seventh and threatened for more but
Ian Halpin was able to strand a runner at third by getting a ground out.
The Stags capped their scoring with a Becchetti single in the eighth after a
Charlie Pagliarini double.
Halpin was able to retire the Hatters in order in the eighth and
Nick Grabek worked a perfect ninth for his first save of the spring.
Every Stag starter got a hit in the victory with Guerrera, Pagliarini, and
Nick Esposito all picking up doubles.
The Stags will complete their play in Florida with a three-game series at South Florida beginning on Friday at 7pm.
