Stags Fall at Marist

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team could not get the defensive stops and the Marist Red Foxes were red hot leading to a 75-45 loss at Marist. The Stags were led by Lou Lopez-Senechal in defeat as the sophomore tallied 16 points.

The Stags started off the game well, connecting on two of their first five shots, including a Lopez-Senechal 3-pointer that gave the Stags an early 5-0 lead. However, that would be all the scoring for the Stags in the first quarter as they went the final 6:42 of the period scoreless. Marist would take full advantage by recording a 16-0 run to end the period.

Katie Armstrong snapped the Stags scoring drought with a layup on Fairfield's first possession of the second quarter. However, the turnovers would haunt the Stags as they committed six miscues in the period and despite shooting 50 percent over the final six minutes, Marist would increase their lead to 17 at the halftime break at 33-16.

Rachel Hakes hit back-to-back attempts to keep the deficit single digits including a 3-pointer from the wing, her third-straight game with a triple. Hakes is shooting 75 percent (3-for-4) from deep in those four contests.

Fairfield struggled on the boards during the first 20 minutes being out-rebounded 26-11 including an 11-1 margin on the offensive glass. Marist turned those extra chances to six second chance points.

The offense improved for the Stags in the second half with Lopez-Senechal hitting back-to-back 3-pointers followed by a MacKenzie Martin layup, but the Red Foxes were even hotter shooting the ball. Marist made nine-straight shots to open up a 56-28 lead.

The Stags were led by Lopez-Senechal who finished with 16 points, her 15th double digit scoring game in her last 16 outings. She went 4-for-6 from behind the arc and is shooting an even 50 percent (11-for-21) from long range in her last three games.

Marist dominated inside as they out-scored the Stags 36-12 inside the paint and out-rebounded Fairfield 47-17 on the boards.

The Stags will look to rebound before playing another top contender in the MAAC when they host Rider on Thursday at 7pm at Alumni Hall.
