GREENSBORO, N.C. –
Sam Merino picked up four more hits this afternoon against Purdue University but the Stags were not able to overcome the Boilermakers offense as the Stags dropped a pair of games at the UNC-Greensboro Invitational on Sunday. Purdue won the first game by a 9-5 score and followed up with a 9-1 victory to complete the sweep.
The Boilermakers started the game with four runs in their half of the first inning, taking four hits and two walks to plate four runs. Kasey Wilholt picked up a two-run double to bring home the final two runs of the first inning. Purdue tacked on two more runs in the second inning with Madison Douglass stroking a two-run single that brought the advantage to 6-0.
Merino was in the middle of Fairfield's two-run rally in the fifth inning, bringing home the first run with a double and scoring the team's second run following a passed ball. Purdue added three runs in the sixth inning, stringing together four hits once again to inflate its lead to 9-2.
Fairfield showed no quit but adding three more runs to its total by collecting four hits of its own, including a two-run double by
Kaitlin Hoffman to bring the game to its final score of 9-5.
The second game featured another fast start for Purdue as the Big Ten foe opened with a two-run first inning. The lead doubled in the next inning when Skye Webb launched a two-run homer that brought score to 4-0.
The Stags put their only run on the scoreboard in the third inning when
Mikayla Rubin scratched out an infield single and took second off
Lacey Olaff's sacrifice bunt.
Megan Forbes sent Rubin home with a base hit that closed the deficit to 4-1. Fairfield recorded three more hits over the final four innings and had base runners in each frame but could not manage to send home another baserunner.
Drew Westford finished the doubleheader with three hits and
Lacey Olaff,
Tahlia Brown, and Rubin added two hits each.
