Stags Fall in Final Seconds in Overtime at Saint Peter’s

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Taiah Thornton broke a tie game with 2.8 seconds left in overtime as she swished through the eventual game-winning 3-pointer as the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team fell 66-63 to the Saint Peter's Peacocks on the road. The Stags had chances at both the end of the fourth quarter and overtime to win, but both chances were off the mark.

Sam Kramer started a late 7-0 rally in the fourth quarter as she picked off a pass and converted the floater on the other end. Armstrong would cap the stretch with a free throw, tying the game at 53-53.

Armstrong would also tie the contest with eight seconds left in overtime before Thornton's heroics.

Neither team would score for the final 2:18 of the quarter, but both teams had opportunities. Fairfield had the final chance with the buzzer sounding by Katie Armstrong's left handed attempt was off the mark.

After not scoring for 2:18 in the fourth, it took Fairfield just three seconds to regain the lead as they won the jump ball and found Lopez-Senechal in transition.

Both teams, however, would exchange baskets until Saint Peter's Williams nailed three free throws for a 63-58 lead.

The Stags kept hope alive as Lopez-Senechal swished through a 3-pointer and got two stops on the defensive end. Armstrong made their efforts worth it as her jumper tied the game at 63-63 with eight seconds left. Saint Peter's would connect on the biggest bucket of the game as Thornton's trifecta found the mark.

The Stags rallied at the end of the first quarter after a Kendrea Williams jumper tied the game at 7-7. Kramer had the highlight of the 6-0 run to end the period as she hit a 3-pointer in transition after accepting the pass from Kendra Landy.

Fairfield would continue their momentum in the second quarter, running up their lead to double digits on two occasions. Eden Nibbelink had a big hand in the hot start to the second quarter as she buried back-to-back trifectas to force a Saint Peter's timeout with the Stags leading 16-9.

The Stags would grab another double-digit lead at 25-14 after a Katie Armstrong 3-point play at the 5:41 mark. That would be the final field goal for the Stags of the half as the Peacocks ended the half on a 10-0 run. Williams netted the first eight points of that stretch capped off by a driving layup by Briyanah Richardson.

Both teams found success on the offensive front, combining for 38 points in the quarter, while shooting 6-for-9 from long range. The Stags regained the lead with an 8-0 run featuring 3-pointers by Kramer and Lou Lopez-Senechal. That run would go to a 12-2 stretch after another Armstrong jumper and a pair of Lopez-Senechal free throws.

Saint Peter's would answer with three 3-pointers in the final two minutes to take a 44-43 lead into the final quarter.

Armstrong led the Stags as she was one rebound shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine boards. Kramer followed her in double figures with 15 to go along with a career-high nine assists. Andrea Hernangomez led the Stags on the boards with 14 rebounds, a new personal best.
