Last Time Out
Fairfield Lacrosse kicked off a new season and a new era on Saturday afternoon, taking the field for the start of the 2020 campaign and first game led by Head Coach
Andrew Baxter. Despite falling behind the Seawolves by a 5-0 count less than 10 minutes into the contest, the Stags regrouped, rallied and came away with an 18-16 victory.
The response was sparked by
Dylan Beckwith, who netted all five of his goals in the first half to get the Fairfield offense rolling. Beckwith also doled out three assists to cap an eight-point day. In the process, the senior moved into a tie for 10th on Fairfield's all-time scoring list with 128 points (60g, 68a). Beckwith also became only the fourth Stag in program history with 60+ goals and 60+ assists in his career.
Taylor Strough also fired home five goals on the afternoon, and two Stags had three points apiece in their respective collegiate debuts as
Trent Moran posted a hat trick and
Bryce Ford scored two goals with one assist.
With Beckwith filling out the statsheet to the tune of eight points, his cohorts of Fairfield's starting attack were the club's top facilitators.
Brian Reda handed out four assists to go along with a goal of his own, and
Patrick Drake doled out three helpers.
The defensive effort was paced by co-captain
Jake Tymon with four caused turnovers and four ground balls from the LSM spot. The defense pressured Stony Brook into 16 turnovers, including a pair of shot-clock violations.
James Corasaniti made 11 saves to earn the win in the cage.
Scouting Merrimack
The reigning back-to-back NCAA Division II National Champions, Merrimack College joined the Division I ranks beginning this season. The Warriors, who went 17-3 overall and 10-1 in the competitive Northeast-10 Conference last spring, were tabbed tied for fourth of five teams in the Northeast Conference East Division preseason poll. Merrimack is off to an 0-2 start to the 2020 campaign with close losses to Holy Cross and Dartmouth.
Merrimack is paced offensively by eight goals from Charlie Bertrand, including six against Big Green this past Saturday. Bertrand was the USILA Division II National Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019. Christian Thomas adds four goals and four assists for the Warriors.
Peter has started both games in the cage for Merrimack, totaling 90 minutes of action. He owns a .462 save percentage and a 14.00 goals-against average. Steve Lauter accounts for the other 30 minutes in goal, made two saves with five goals allowed.
The Warriors primary faceoff man is Davis Cronin at 17-of-39 on the year with Allyn French adding a 7-of-16 line.
