SPARKS, Md. – Fairfield University Athletics Hall of Famer Greg Downing '07 has once again been tabbed by US Lacrosse to represent the United States at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships. The 2019 edition of the international tournament will be held in Langley, British Columbia from Sept. 19-28, 2019.
Also a member of the bronze-medal winning 2011 and 2015 U.S. squads, Downing is among the 23 standouts chosen by Head Coach Regy Thorpe and his staff. Downing currently plays professionally in the National Lacrosse League for the New England Black Wolves. He is in his 14th professional season since being drafted by the Los Angeles Riptide as the sixth overall pick in the 2007 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft – the first and only first-round selection to date in program history.
Downing was the 2005 Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) Offensive Player of the Year as the Stags won the conference championship to advance to the NCAA postseason. He ranks fifth all-time in career goals at Fairfield with 101 and seventh in career points with 141. The only three-time USILA All-America selection in program history, Downing was also the GWLL Rookie of the Year in 2004.
Among the seven alternates chosen by the US Lacrosse was former Stag Brent Adams '12. Adams totaled an even 100 points for the Stags from 2009-12 with 68 goals and 32 assists. He was a USILA Third Team All-American in his senior campaign of 2012 to cap a career that included four-time All-New England and three-time All-ECAC laurels.
Adams currently suits up for Redwoods LC of the Premier Lacrosse League. He is in his ninth professional season since being drafted by the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the 2012 MLL Draft.
The U.S. team opens its schedule on Sept. 19 against Canada and has pool play games against Israel on Sept. 20 and the Iroquois Nationals on Sept. 21.
