FAIRFIELD, Conn. --
Mikayla Rubin hit a three-run homer in the top of the 6th inning which erased a one-run deficit and sent the Fairfield University softball team to a 5-2 win over Sacred Heart University. The victory was the Stags second straight road decision and eighth true road win of the 2019- campaign.
Fairfield lit up the scoreboard first with an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning as
Lacey Olaff sent a pitch to right field which was misplayed and allowed
Amanda Ulzheimer to cross home plate. Ulzheimer opened the inning with an infield hit and set herself in scoring position with a stolen base. Olaff was credited with an RBI despite the outfielder's error.
The Pioneers overcame the early deficit with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, a rally which began when Hailey Desrosiers picked up a single to put a runner on base. Stephanie Mangiamel laced a double to the left-center field gap that allowed Desrosiers to tie the game at 1-1, and later tallied the go-ahead run after Katelyn Christian placed a single to center field.
The lead was short-lived for the home team as Fairfield collected four runs in the top of the sixth inning. The top of the order set the successful frame up when Ulzheimer and Marshall reached base with a single and each stole a base to put runners on second and third. The duo's position really didn't matter though because Rubin stepped into the batter's box and drove a pitch over the left-center field fence to give Fairfield a two-run lead at 4-2. The Stags were not done though as Olaff followed with an infield single and yielded her spot on the base paths to pinch runner
Kaleigh MacDonald. The pinch runner moved up a base on a ground out before flying home when
Drew Westford singled to left field.
Olaff returned to the game to pitch the sixth and seventh innings, surrendering one hit in each frame, but kept the Stags' three-run lead intact. She was credited with her first collegiate win based on her efforts, relieving starter
Lauryn Rhinehart who struck out five hitters in her time in the pitching circle.
The Stags return home for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader against Manhattan College on Saturday. One day later, Fairfield hosts Quinnipiac for another doubleheader. Both twin bills are scheduled for 12 pm.
