Stags Stopped By NJIT

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team dropped an 8-0 decision in their first of two midweek contests to the visiting NJIT Highlanders on Tuesday. Fairfield managed just three hits, two of those coming off of Highlander's starter Jake Rappaport who hurled a season-high 6.1 innings.

The Stags (26-18) got their first hit of the game off the bat of Mike Caruso who lined a single to leadoff the fifth. Jack Gethings would tally his 70th hit of the season on an infield single and Matt Ferriero recorded his first hit of 2019 with a single in the ninth.

NJIT scored all eight runs inside the first seven frames with a pair of runs in the first and fifth innings and three in the fourth. Justin Etts and Nick Hussey each tallied three hits for the Highlanders, one of just four players to record hits for the winning team. NJIT drew five walks and were hit by four pitches in the game.

Bryson Cafaro and Nick Grabek were the lone Stags to pitch a clean inning in relief as they threw a scoreless eighth and ninth innings respectively.

The biggest highlight for the Stags came in the sixth inning as Tyler Gambardella robbed a home run as he fully extended over the left field wall to take a guaranteed home run away.

Fairfield will host Hartford in midweek action on Wednesday at 2:30pm.
