FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- It only seemed right that senior
Karisa Hughen garner the start for the Fairfield University softball team's regular-season finale on Sunday. The senior was one of five Stags playing their final game at Alumni Softball Field so the pitcher made the most of her opportunity. The right-hander scattered four hits and struck out eight batters to register her second shutout of the season as Fairfield upended the University of Hartford by a 4-0 score.
Hughen earned her fifth win of the season by earning her fifth complete of the season. She struck out at least one batter in every inning which helped her settle on her season high total. With the victory,
Hughen improved her overall record to 5-7 in the pitching circle. The Stags and the Hawks were locked in a pitching duel through the first couple of innings before Fairfield found its way inside the batter's box. Fairfield scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take control of the game
The inning started when Madison
Robicheau went the other way and sent a pitch down the right field line to put a runner on first base. Amanda
Ulzheimer sent
Robicheau to second base when she sliced a single through the left side of the infield, putting runners on first and second.
Alisha Marshall further
enhanced the team's chances when she placed a bunt between the catcher and pitcher, allowing the runners to move one base closer to home plate.
Mikayla Rubin brought both runners home when she laced a ball past a diving right fielder that resulted in a triple for Rubin and a pair of runs for the teams. Lacey
Olaff brought home the last run of the inning when she hit a bouncer up the middle that seemed destined for center field. Pitcher Isabelle
Jerone flashed her glove and deflected the ball to the shortstop, who completed the play at first for the second out.
Fairfield would manage one more run in the game which came in the fifth inning, courtesy of a pair of hits and a Hartford error.
Ulzheimer was at the heart of the rally once again as she led off the frame with a single up the middle. Once again, Marshall sacrificed her time at bat with a bunt that brought
Ulzheimer into scoring position. Rubin hit a fly ball to right field that was tracked down but far enough to allow the base runner to move up.
Olaff came to the plate and sent a ball back up the middle once again, but this time the ball skipped past the infield and brought the game's final run home.
The Stags managed six hits in the game with
Ulzheimer being responsible for three of the team's singles. Rubin,
Olaff, and
Robicheau were the other Fairfield student-athletes with a
hit in the game.
Fairfield will finish the regular season next weekend when it travels to New Jersey for a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (
MAAC) doubleheaders, beginning with a twin bill at Monmouth University on May 4. The team caps the weekend with another doubleheader, heading to Rider University the next day.
