Softball Drops A Pair On Opening Day Of Stony Brook Invitational

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University softball team opened the Stony Brook Invitational by dropping a pair of game this afternoon, coming up short against the host school by a 5-2 count and against Bryant University by a 7-2 score.

The Stags' offense was present in the tournament opener, registering 12 hits in the game which marked the 10th time this season that Fairfield has collected 10 or more hits in a game. But the difference in this game came in the fact that the Stags left 11 runners on base which tied their season high for that statistical category. Stony Brook built an early lead by scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning against starting pitcher Karisa Hughen. The Seawolves would added to their lead with two more runs in the third inning, both of which scored off a single with two outs.

Trailing 4-0 after four innings, the Stags put their first run on the scoreboard when they plated a run in their half of the fifth inning. Madison Robicheau started the scoring chance with an infield single to the right side. She advanced to second base on a ground out and took third base after Courtney Hankins sent a single up the middle. Mikayla Rubin chased home the run with a fielder's choice that cut the lead to 4-1.

A pair of doubles in the sixth inning allowed the Seawolves to recapture their four-run lead before Fairfield closed out the scoring with a run in its final at-bat. Sam Merino started things off with an infield single and advance a base after Rubin's single. Kaitlin Hoffman kept the rally going with a single that loaded the bases while Lauryn Rhinehart completed the opportunity with a sacrifice fly that brought the score to its final tally.

In the second game, Bryant took a 1-0 lead with a pair of hits off starter Katie Kudlacik that culminated in the one runner coming home. Fairfield took the lead in the bottom of the inning as the team put together three hits to register the two runs. Rubin sliced a single with one out and moved up two bases following Maria Telle's base hit to the opposite field. Telle swiped second base to put two runners in scoring position, an opportunity that Lacey Olaff quickly converted with her two-run single to left field.

Bryant came back with six runs in the top of the fifth inning as the team used three hits and took advantage of three errors to score six times to take a 7-2 lead.

The Stags will close out their time at the Invitational on Sunday by playing Bryant at 10:30 am and Stony Brook at 12:30 pm.
