CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Fairfield University softball team finally had the chance to the field on Saturday after getting rained out against host North Carolina on Friday. The delay did not seem to bother the Stags as they opened the day with a 6-5 eight-inning win over George Washington University before closing with a 9-1 loss against UNC-Greensboro. Once again, the Stags' offense was well doled out between everyone in the lineup as all nine starters collected at least one hit in the game.
George Washington opened the scoring with a single run in the second inning, but the lead was short lived because Fairfield sent home two runners in the top of the second inning.
Alisha Marshall started the inning with a single and stole second base to put a runner in scoring position. Amanda
Ulzheimer drove a double to right field which brought home the Stags' first run. After taking third base on the throw home,
Ulzheimer jogged home when
Sam Merino collected a single.
Fairfield tacked on three more runs to take a commanding 5-1 lead in the fifth inning as the team stroked three hits in the frame. The first three runners reached base with
Ulzheimer picking up an infield hit, Merino finding the gap for a double, and
Hankins working a walk to load the bases.
Mikayla Rubin brought home the first run when she earned a walk to force home the team's third run. Lacey
Olaff made the score 4-1 with her fielder's choice before Madison
Robicheau's single closed the scoring.
George Washington tied the game with a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to make it a 5-5 game. Priscilla Martinez registered a two-run double that knotted the score.
"The top of the order set the tone for us initially, but our offensive production was evident throughout the lineup," Head Coach
Julie Brzezinski said. "We battled with every at-bat and showed a lot of poise and confidence once George Washington tied the score up in the sixth."
The game was decided in the top of the eighth inning as Fairfield pushed across the deciding run. Maria
Telle reached first base when her grounder was mishandled and took second on
Ulzheimer's bunt.
Hankins sent a pitch to right field that found the turn and allowed
Telle to scamper home with the winning run. Pitcher Katie
Kudlacik earned the win by yielding one run on four hits in addition to striking out three batters which improved her record to 2-0.
"
Kudlacik settled in nicely after the sixth inning and complimented
(Karisa) Hughen's first five innings," Coach Brzezinski said.
In the second game, Fairfield fell behind when UNC-Greensboro scored four runs with at least one run in five of six innings to take the 9-1 decision. The Stags scored their lone run in the third inning off of
Hankins' third home run, a shot that cleared the left field fence.
