SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Taylor Strough scored the equalizing goal for Fairfield University Men's Lacrosse with just nine seconds remaining in regulation on Tuesday at Bryant, sending the contest into an extra session. The sophomore then punctuated his career day with his sixth strike of the afternoon, netting the game-winner to propel the Stags to a 12-11 victory.
Strough's six goals and seven points both marked career highs for the sophomore. He now leads Fairfield (3-3) with 14 markers through six games this season. The effort also marked his third consecutive multi-point game, tallying at least one goal and one assist in each outing during the streak.
The Fairfield offense also saw
Dylan Beckwith and
Patrick Drake each post two goals and two assists. For Beckwith, the effort extended his point streak to 14 straight games and stretched his CAA-leading total to 17 assists this spring. Drake, meanwhile, bounced back from his first scoreless performance as a Stag this past Saturday against Georgetown with the first multiple-assist game of his young career to go along with his two scores.
Rounding out the goal scoring was
Travis Ford with two markers and one assist as he continued his consistent pace; the junior has scored in the last five games after missing the Feb. 16 season opener, including four contests with two or more goals.
Brendan Quinn racked up five points in the midfield without the benefit of a goal as he distributed a career-best five assists. Quinn is the first Stag to total five points in a game without scoring a goal since Charlie Schnider '16 did so twice during his senior campaign.
All told, Fairfield notched 12 goals against the nation's eighth-ranked defense. The Bulldogs entered the day allowing only 9.00 goals per game and had only allowed one opponent to reach double figures this season – Boston University in a 14-9 loss on Feb. 26.
On Fairfield's defensive end,
Brian Cosgrove got the call for his first career start as a defenseman and collected a team-leading and career-high five ground balls.
George Elmquist added a pair of new career highs with four ground balls and four caused turnovers, and
Adam Riestis contributed three ground balls and two caused turnovers from the defensive midfield.
In the cage,
James Corasaniti made eight saves and collected three ground balls to improve to 3-2 as Fairfield's starting goalkeeper.
Bryant (2-5) was led its own six-goal performance as reigning NEC Rookie of the Year Marc O'Rourke rattled the cage a half-dozen times for the Bulldogs. The hosts also benefited from three goals and two assists by Trevor Weingarten. Bryant was kept on the attack via a strong performance from faceoff man Jack Aigner, who went 19-of-24 on the draw with 11 ground balls. In the cage, Luke Caracciolo made 14 stops.
The Stags return to Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium on Friday, March 15 for their inaugural meeting with first-year Division I program Utah. Faceoff under the lights is set for 7 p.m. with all of the action set for broadcast live on the Lax Sports Network.
The Utes, who will play at #2 Duke tonight, are currently 4-3 on the year and riding a three-game winning streak.
Notes
Fairfield is now 4-1 all-time against Bryant. Prior to today, neither team had ever scored in double-digit goals in the series.
The Stags are 14-11 in overtime games all-time and 9-5 in extra sessions under Head Coach
Andy Copelan.
Today's game marked the latest in regulation that the Stags trailed in an eventual win since Feb. 21, 2004 when Garrett Bamann scored the equalizer with six seconds to play and Tom Werney got the golden goal in an 8-7 double-overtime win at Providence.
