BOSTON – Fairfield University Women's Lacrosse was on the short side of a 16-5 decision in non-conference action at Boston University on Wednesday afternoon. Three of the Stags' goals came from
Taylor Mitchell to post her fourth multi-goal outing of the season.
Â
After her hat trick today, Mitchell leads Fairfield (3-2) with 13 goals this season.
Jillian Winwood added a pair of tallies to boost her total to 12 markers in 2019.
Meaghan Graham added a pair of assists on the day, and
Kelly Gordon doled out one helper.
Â
In the midfield,
Kennedy Slater and
Erin Mammele each hauled in three draw controls. Mammele added a team-leading four ground balls with
Maggie Reynolds corralling three.
Â
The Stags did their part to slow the Boston University attack, which totaled 37 goals in its prior two outings.
Olivia Conquest made a career-best 14 saves in the cage, and the defense pressured the Terriers into 22 turnovers.
Kathleen Hulseman caused four BU turnovers and
Caroline Mangan was the catalyst for three takeaways. However, the relentless BU offense fired 37 shots as compared to Fairfield's 15 to amass their 16 markers today.
Â
Fairfield struck first on a Winwood goal and, after a pair of BU tallies, Mitchell's first of the day knotted the score at 2-2. That deadlock was the last of the day, however, as the Terriers scored six of the next seven goals to build a lead they would not relinquish. The hosts went on to put together runs of 3-0 and 5-0 in the second half – as Winwood scored the lone Fairfield goal after halftime – to pull away for the 16-5 final decision.
Â
2018 First Team All-Patriot League attacker Kailey Conry led the Terriers with two goals and three assists, while the trio of Lexi Lewis, Kelly Matthews and Makenzie Irvine each converted a hat trick. Bianca Smith made five saves to earn the victory in goal.
Â
Today's game was the only road outing in a 34-day span for Fairfield, which now begins a three-game homestand on Sunday, March 3 against New Hampshire. The Stags will also host #7/9 Denver on March 8 and Sacred Heart on March 20 as a part of the three-game residency at Rafferty Stadium.
