Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stags Fall to Brown in Final Game of 2019

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team could not ride the momentum after a near upset of St. John's as they fell to the Brown Bears at home two days late by a 58-44 final score.

After shooting 50 percent against St. John's, their highest percentage of the season, the Stags shot just 33 percent in the setback against Brown, including missing all 13 of their shot attempts. It marked just the second time in the 13 years under Head Coach Joe Frager where the Stags failed to hit a 3-pointer in the game, and the first time in Alumni Hall. Fairfield went 0-for-6 from deep against Rider on Jan. 22, 2015.

Fairfield led for just 47 seconds in the contest, all coming in the second quarter. Rachel Hakes gave the Stags their only leads in the quarter, with a pair of free throws and then a layup after Brown had tied the game.

The game would have four ties, with the Stags tying the game twice in the first quarter after two pointers from Sam Kramer and Andrea Hernangomez.

After taking the lead 17-15 just 33 seconds into the second quarter, Brown would score 13 of the next 17 points of the half. Fairfield would score just four points over the final 9:27 of the quarter, including a five minute scoring drought until a Katie Armstrong field goal. That two pointer cut the Brown lead to just four with 47 seconds left in the first half, but the Bears would tally the final basket of the half and bring a 28-21 lead into the locker room.

That would be the closest the Stags would come the rest of the way. Brown would score the first two buckets of the second half extending the lead to 11. Fairfield cut the deficit to six on a few occasions but could not get any closer.

Hakes had the best offensive game for the Stags, reaching double figures with 10 mostly by drives into the lane. Hakes hit four of her five attempts from inside the 3-point arc.

Armstrong led the Stags with 11 points, the third-straight game she has reached double figures.

The Stags have now wrapped up non-conference play and will turn their attention to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play as they travel to Siena to face the Saints on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020 at 7pm.
