FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will play their final game of the decade when they host the Brown Bears on Sunday at 2pm on the George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall. The Stags enter the contest playing some of their best basketball of the season over the last three games, with a 2-1 mark and their lone loss being a near upset of St. John's.
The Stags took the Big East squad to the wire in their last game before ultimately falling 71-69 in overtime. Fairfield had led by two with under 15 seconds to go in both regulation and in overtime. In both cases, the Red Storm were able to tie the game late to escape with a victory. In the extra period, the Red Storm scored the game's final four points in nine seconds with Leilani Correa winning the game with a jumper with 1.5 seconds left.
Katie Armstrong was the Stag to give the team their late leads, hitting the final field goal in each of the third, fourth, and overtime period. Armstrong's biggest shot gave the Stags a one point lead with 15 seconds left in the team's final possession of regulation. Armstrong had a great all-around game, tying the team lead with eight rebounds and also pacing the team with three blocks and four steals.
The offensive star of the near upset was
Lou Lopez-Senechal as she posted a career-high 27 points on a personal best 11 made field goals. Lopez-Senechal scored 11 of the team's 15 points in the first quarter and netted 12 in the third quarter, helping Fairfield to the largest lead of the game at seven.
Fairfield led for 17 of the game's final 26 minutes, as St. John's was not able to grab a second half lead until the 3:45 mark of the fourth quarter.
Correa led all players with 31 point, just the second player to eclipse 30 points against Head Coach
Joe Frager in his 13 years with the Stags.
Fairfield will play in their final game of the decade as they will not take the court until conference play in 2020. The Stags are 170-143 during the decade with a 77-37 mark at Alumni Hall.
The Bears snapped a three game losing streak with a win over Bryant in their last time out. Brown will be fresh for this game as they last took the court against the Bulldogs two weeks ago.
The Bears are averaging 62.5 points per game while pulling down 37.8 rebounds per contest.
Justine Gaziano leads the team with a 14.9 scoring average, the lone Browns player to average double figures. She is also the team's best 3-point shooter with a .333 percentage from deep. Ashley Ducharme and Haley Green pace the team with 5.0 rebounds per contest. Ducharme is the team's most accurate shooter, making nearly 43 percent of her attempts.
The Stags will next take the court in 2020 when they open up MAAC play traveling to Siena on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 7pm.
