FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After a nearly two week hiatus, the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will return to the hard wood when they travel to Kingston, R.I., to face the URI Rams on Sunday at 2pm. The two teams will be meeting for the third time in the last four seasons, with the Rams holding a 2-0 record in the recent stretch and a 4-5 record in the all-time series.
Fairfield is coming off a close 52-51 setback in their home opener against Dartmouth on November 17. The Stags led for all but 36 seconds in the first half and by 10 in the third quarter, but the Big Green used a 14-0 run to end the third period to grab a lead they would not give up. The Stags had two chances in the final seconds to grab the victory but shots from
Lou Lopez-Senechal and
Sam Kramer were off the mark.
The game is the second-straight for the Stags that was decided by one or two points, with Fairfield's 53-51 victory over LIU being their lone win of the season. Under
Joe Frager's 13 year helm, the Stags have had success in games decided by one or two points. Fairfield is 20-9 under Frager in those games. The setback against Dartmouth was Fairfield's first loss by one point in nearly four years, coming at Marist in 2016.
The Stags dished out 15 assists in their setback against Dartmouth, with four of those coming from senior
Sam Kramer. In the contest, Kramer recorded her 200th career assists.
The Rams are 3-2 on the early season with victories over LIU, Hartford, and most recently an overtime win against Vermont. URI is one of the best rebounding teams the Stags will see all year, as they average 46.2 rebounds per contest, which leads the A-10 and places 21st in the country. The Rams have five players who average 6.0 or more rebounds a game.
Nicole Jorgensen is the team's leading scorer as the senior puts in 18.2 points a game while shooting 23-26 from the free throw line. Jorgensen was the team's lone representative on the Atlantic 10 Preseason Team, being selected to the Third Team.
Fairfield will host two home games next week, starting with a Wednesday night contest against Navy at 6pm.
