Senior Day Sweep Stakes Fairfield to 19th Consecutive Win

The Stags senior class earned its 88th career win with the victory

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Volleyball extended its winning streak to 19 matches on Sunday afternoon, putting together a 3-0 sweep of visiting Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on Senior Day on George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall. The Stags recognized seniors Jamie Calandro, Mayda Garcia, Manuela Nicolini and Sonja Radulovic prior to the match.

With the win by set scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-16, Fairfield improves to 21-4 on the season and 16-0 in the MAAC. Saint Peter's falls to 3-26 on the campaign and 1-16 in the conference.

For the Fairfield seniors, the win was their 88th career triumph. The quartet is 63-7 all-time in MAAC regular season, currently tied with a class of their former teammates who racked up 63 conference wins from 2014-17. The MAAC record is 67 conference wins for a four-year class obtained by the Fairfield group that took the court from 2006-09.

"Today was about celebrating our seniors and all that they have accomplished over four years. I think their records speak for themselves with two MAAC Championships and three Regular Season Championships," said Head Coach Todd Kress. "They have meant a lot to our program, and fortunately they still have volleyball left to play right here at Alumni Hall."

The Stags, who have already locked up the top seed in the upcoming MAAC Championship, will host the six-team tournament at Alumni Hall from Nov. 22-24.

In today's victory, Kaylie Butts paced the attack from the middle with 15 kills on .393 hitting. The reigning MAAC Player of the Week also had a hand in all five Fairfield blocks, including one solo rejection. Laura Seeger added 14 kills for the Stags on the right side, and Joelle Battles sent home 10 finishers at a .400 clip. To round out the attack, Luci Albertson and Sonja Radulovic registered five kills apiece.

Fairfield's offense was run to a .298 hitting percentage by Manuela Nicolini, who handed out 42 assists in addition to one kill of her own on her only swing of the contest. The Stags remain as the top attack in the MAAC, boosting their season hitting percentage to .223.

To cap the scoring from the end lines, Radulovic served up a pair of aces with Albertson, Nicolini, Jamie Calandro and Morgan Doll each landing one winner.

In the back row, Calandro donned the libero jersey and celebrated Senior Day with a career-high 18 digs. Nicolini added 11 digs to complete her 16th double-double of the fall and her eighth consecutive double-double. Radulovic and Doll each contributed seven digs to the defensive effort.

Teaming with Butts to control the net, Battles had a hand in a pair of blocks with Nicolini and Radulovic each in on one stuff. Fairfield's defense limited Saint Peter's to a .136 hitting percentage in the match.

Leading the Peacocks' attack was Alanis Alvarado with 13 kills on .250 hitting. Wildalys Soto distributed 19 assists for Saint Peter's, and libero Karla Seda led all players with 19 digs.

Up next, Fairfield completes the regular season on the MAAC's annual Western New York swing with visits to Canisius (13-15, 10-6 MAAC) and Niagara (12-14, 11-5 MAAC) on Nov. 16-17. First serve in both contests is slated for 1 p.m.

The 2019 MAAC Championship begins on Friday, Nov. 22. As the tournament's top seed, Fairfield first takes the court in the postseason on Saturday, Nov. 23 against an opponent to be determined.
