Volleyball Keeps Winning Streak Alive With Sweep Of Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- And then there was one.

The Fairfield University volleyball team picked up its fifth straight win tonight by sweeping host Marist College by scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 28-26 at the McCann Center. With the victory, the Stags are now the only remaining unbeaten team in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. Marist entered the night as the conference's other unbeaten team in conference action but saw that distinction taken away with Fairfield's fifth MAAC win and sixth victory overall.

"I am proud of our resiliency tonight," Head Coach Todd Kress said. "We only had one day to prepare for this match and it was an abbreviated day of practice at that. So to go on the road and pull out a three-set win is big for us right now."

Fairfield never trailed in the opening set although the two teams battled it out by exchanging points early. With the score tied at 3-3, the Stags broke the trend by scoring three straight points to take a 6-3 edge. Sonja Radulovic and Sydney Williams were responsible for two of those points as each placed a kill in the mini-run. The team was able to nearly double that lead by building an 11-5 lead after Luci Albertson's  kill. The lead would reach as many as 10 points at 21-11 before a late Marist rally would end the set with Fairfield holding a 25-19 edge.

The second set started in similar fashion with the two teams posting a pair of points early to stay tied at 2-2. This time, Marist was able to break free of the matching scores by outscoring Fairfield to take a two-point lead at 4-2. The Red Foxes would hold that two-point edge on a few occasions, the last of which came at 13-11, before Fairfield staked its claim to this set by registering five straight points to move the score to 16-13 after Marist helped the cause with a couple of errors. The Stags would not relinquish the lead from that point and would hold on to a 25-23 win in the set.

The Stags completed the sweep with another edge-of-your-seat set that have kept fans engaged in the team's current run of victories. The visitors started out with an early lead at 8-6 before the home team strung together four points that turned a two-point deficit into a two-point lead for Marist. Fairfield rallied to tie the game at 10-10. The tied score would be the first of 12 more deadlocks, the last of which came at 26-26. The Stags won the set and the match when Kaitlyn Fisher and Emily Schillinger rallied for back-to-back kills to give their teammates the necessary points to end the evening.

Mayda Garcia was the lone Stag to reach double figures in the kill column this evening, registering 16 which led to a .208 hitting percentage. She completed a double-double with 10 digs, a total which she shared with Alexis Rich. Rich also had a double-double with her 37 assists. Taylor Rudeen led all Fairfield student-athletes with 12 digs.

Fairfield will return to the court on Saturday night when the team hosts Quinnipiac University on Saturday night at Alumni Hall. The match is scheduled for a 7 pm start.
