SMITHFIELD, R.I. – For the first 80 minutes of the contest, the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team was able to control the Bryant Bulldogs, holding a slim 1-0 lead. However, a late offensive flurry from Bryant saw the Bulldogs net two goals in the final 10 minutes, giving the Stags a 2-1 loss on the road. The reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Offensive Player of the Week
Alex Madden was the lone Stag to touch the back of the net as she pushed across her conference leading fourth goal of the season.
Madden's score opened up the scoring for the Stags (3-2-0) after fellow sophomore
Shannon Ryan was able to chip a pass behind a trio of defenders, finding Madden inside the box. Madden was able to convert her chance for her fourth goal of the season and the 11th of her career.
The Stags held the majority of quality of chances until Bryant's (2-1) late flurry.
Sara Plowman created the first real chance of the game for the Stags in the tenth minute as she held a quick 1v1 opportunity against Bryant's goalkeeper and tried to hit it over her head. However, Meghan Dalton was able to reach up and get her fingertips on the shot to misdirect the attempt.
Bryant's first chance came seven minutes later when Remi Manna unleashed a shot to the left side of the goal, but
Aytana Muschajew was able to dive and hit the shot away, the first of her four saves on the afternoon.
The Stags were able to get two more shots on target in the rest of the game, but both were saved by Dalton. The goalkeeper was able to corral
Maggie Walsh's attempt right before halftime and was able to catch a lined shot from
Liz Dumas in the 56th minute.
The Fairfield defense was able to solve Bryant for the first 80 minutes, as they turned away all of Bryant's 15 total shots and all four on target. The momentum shifted in the final 10 minutes of the contest when Cayla D'Amico was able to tie the game on a corner kick. The initial service was headed out by the Fairfield defense, but found the feet of D'Amico who beat the keeper to the upper right.
The Bulldogs capped off their comeback three minutes later when D'Amico helped set up a breakaway with Manna finding the back of the net for the game-winner.
For the game, the Stags were out-shot 17-16, including a 9-3 margin in the second half. Dumas and Madden led the squad with three attempts apiece.
The Stags will have a seven-day layoff until they return to action on Lessing Field when they host Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 7, at 7pm.
