Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Drops Opener To New Hampshire 1-0

DURHHAM, N.H. -- In a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament game, the Fairfield University men's soccer team was edged by the University of New Hampshire by a 1-0 score at Wildcat Stadium on the UNH campus. The game's lone goal was scored just two minutes into overtime when Donnett Sackie collected a rebound and sent the ball into the upper corner of the goal for the victory.

Fairfield goalkeeper Gordon Botterill enjoyed a strong start to his sophomore season by making six saves in the game, picking up two stops in the first half and three more in the second half. Both of his first half saves came in a five-minute span that started with a direct shot from 25 yards out that he was able to corral to keep the game scoreless. Five minutes later, the Wildcats nearly put the ball in the goal with a redirected shots from close range, but Botterill was equal to the task.

Diego Casielles was responsible for the Stags only shot on target during the first half when he released the ball from just outside the box that New Hampshire goalkeeper Luis Huxsohl was able to push away from danger. It would be the team's only shot on goal for the game.

The game-winning goal came just after the start of overtime when Antonio Colaaci took a shot from outside the box that forced Botterill to knock the ball down but the ball landed on the feet of Sackie who finished the opportunity to end the match.

The Stags will return to action on Friday when they continue their five-game season-opening road trip against St. John's University. Game time is slated for 8 pm
