HARRISONBURG, Va. – Fairfield University Volleyball capped the Tropical Smoothie Invitational with its first win of the 2018 campaign, sweeping Delaware State by a count of 3-0.
Laura Seeger led the effort with 16 kills on 28 errorless swings (.571), and
Alexis Rich notched her first career double-double with 30 assists and 11 digs.
With the win, the Stags close out their opening weekend at 1-2, while Delaware State drops to 0-3.
Seeger's effort paced an offense that rattled off a .391 team hitting percentage.
Luci Albertson and
Julia Kallen added six kills apiece for the Stags.
Sydney Williams posted four kills,
Mayda Garcia landed three, and the trio of
Sonja Radulovic,
Emily Schillinger and
Kaylie Butts sent home two.
In addition to managing the attack with a career-best 30 assists, Rich dumped over one kill of her own.
Fairfield also scored five points from behind the service line, led by a trio of aces for Albertson. Rich and
Jamie Calandro also dropped in one winner apiece.
Rich's 11 digs led the effort in the back row, with Raduovic and
Taylor Rudeen each adding nine digs. Rudeen also distributed six assists from the libero spot. At the net, Kallen had two solo blocks, and Albertson also played a role in a pair of send-backs.
Delaware State was led by eight kills on .636 hitting from Kiera Holtzclaw. Sydney Sheppard and Milexa Cardona distributed 14 and nine assists, respectively, and Leimaluhia Taula had a team-high 10 digs.
Up next, Fairfield opens the home slate on Wednesday, Aug. 29 with a 7 p.m. visit from crosstown foe Sacred Heart. Town of Fairfield residents in attendance will receive free entry into a drawing to win tickets to select Fairfield Men's and Women's Basketball games.
