PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- Wall space is at a premium for
Tyler Nelson after enjoying a highly-decorated season that has included honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Now, Nelson can add the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament to his list of accolades as the guard was placed on the All-Tournament Team following his performance at the prestigious event.
The Massachusetts native finished in the top 15 for scoring during the three-game tournament, pouring in 14.7 points per game. He posted 17 points in his tournament debut with Sales Systems Ltd., defeating Cherry Bekaert by a 103-93 score. He followed up that performance. He came off the bench to score eight points in the team's victory in game two, an 85-83 victory which sent the team to the tournament's championship game.
In the title match up, Nelson led his team in scoring with 19 points which included the game-winning layup in the closing seconds to lead Sales Systems Ltd. to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament championship. He shot 52 percent from the floor during the three-game tournament, making 17 of 33 field goal attempts which placed in the top 10 among all players. The guard also shot 41 percent from three-point range, netting seven of 17 tries from beyond the arc. He averaged 1.7 steals per game which placed him fifth among the tournament field and also contributed 2.7 assists per game.
Nelson enjoyed one of the best offensive careers and seasons in school history by establishing the school record for career points (2,172 points) and points in a season (732 points in 2017-18), the first 700-point season in school history. The Massachusetts native was the top scorer in the MAAC with a 22.2 scoring average this year, a number which also places 13th in the NCAA Division I statistics. He also places nationally in three pointers made per game (23rd with 3.15 pg) and in free throw percentage (26th with .880).
