FAIRFIELD, Conn. –
Tyler Nelson received an invitation to participate in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) 2018 Reese's College All-Star Game, one of 22 senior men's basketball student-athletes selected for the game. He is the only student-athlete from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) to garner a berth in the event, and the first MAAC representative since 2012.
The NABC Reese's College All-Star Game takes place on Friday, March 30 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The game will be televised live at 4:30 p.m. (Eastern Time) on the CBS Sports Network.The game will feature two rosters of 11 student-athletes with Nelson competing for the West All-Stars, coached by Boston University's Joe Jones.
The guard enjoyed one of the best offensive seasons in school history, scoring a school-record 732 points and becoming the first Stag to tally more than 700 points in a season. Nelson ended his career as the program's all-time leading scorer with 2,172 points. He posted a school-standard 104 three pointers in 2017-18 which raised his record-setting career total to 315 over his four-year career.
In addition to his prestigious placement in the All-Star Game, Nelson was also rewarded for his efforts in 2017-18 with his second straight appearances on the NABC All-District I team. . Most recently, the Massachusetts native was named to the All-ECAC first team. Nelson, who was selected the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, collected All-MAAC first team honors for the 2017-18 campaign, his second straight placement on the conference's postseason team.
Nelson was instrumental in the Stags' run to the 2018 MAAC Tournament Championship game, averaging 24.8 points per game over the team's four-game run in Albany. His success in the MAAC postseason event is no surprise since he finished the year as the conference's top overall scorer (22.2 ppg) and in MAAC play as well (22.3 ppg). His overall scoring average currently places him 12th in the nation.
