FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- For the second straight season, Fairfield University guard
Tyler Nelson earned a spot on the National Association of Basketball Coaches (
NABC) All-District team, collecting First Team honors following his historic 2017-18 campaign. The senior set many offensive school records this season and finished his career ranked fifth among the
MAAC's all-time leading scorers.
Nelson enjoyed one of the best offensive seasons in school history by establishing the school record for career points (2,172 points) and points in a season (732 points), becoming the first student-athlete in Fairfield men's basketball history to surpass 700 points in a season. The Massachusetts native ended the year as the top scorer in the
MAACÂ with a 22.2 scoring average, a number which also places
11th in the current NCAA
Division I statistics. He also places nationally in three pointers made per game (
22nd with 3.15 pg) and in free throw percentage (
27th with .880).
Nelson also showed his shooting range by setting the program's standard for three-point shooting, netting a career record 315 three-point field goals over his four-year stay. He hit that mark after netting 104 three pointers in 2017-18, becoming the first Stag in school history to reach the century mark in that category.
Nelson, who was named the
MAAC's preseason player of the year, capped his senior season with his fourth berth to a conference postseason awards team. He collected
All-MAAC first team honors for the second straight season after garnering
All-MAAC third team accolades as a sophomore and a spot on the
MAACÂ All-Rookie team in his inaugural year with the program. The guard was a
NABCÂ All-District first team pick in 2016-17.
The Fairfield University men's basketball team, under Head Coach
Sydney Johnson, finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 17-16 overall record which included a seven-game winning streak over the final weeks of the season. The Stags advanced to the
MAACÂ Tournament championship game, the second such appearance under Coach Johnson.Â
