BUFFALO, N.Y. – Head Coach
Anthony Bruno has been preaching the same motto and goal to his team since the beginning of the season; "Win the MAAC" and the Fairfield women's swimming and diving team did just that. After four days of fantastic competition in Buffalo, N.Y., the Stags held off rival Marist and won the 2018 MAAC Championships.
The Stags started the day with a narrow six-point lead over Marist but just as they had all season, the women's team stood up to the challenge in front of them and had one of their best performances in the pool.
The final day of competition started with a win as
Sara Ostensen dominated in the 1650 Yard Freestyle finishing with a time of 16:55.48.
Haleigh McLaughlin also finished in sixth place with a time of 17:19.40. The Stags did not stop there as
Kelly Cordes won the 100 Yard Freestyle clocking in at 51.76 while
Sarah Herbold and
Maria Nitti finished in third and fourth place respectively.
Colleen Young and
Emily Vlass went one-two in the 200 Yard Breaststroke with Young finishing with a winning time of 2:20.86 and Vlass clocking in behind at 2:22.69.
Oreoluwa Cherebin also placed fifth with a time of 2:25.58 while
Victoria Krivitsky placed eighth. Fairfield again went one-two in the 200 Yard Butterfly as
Morgan Hansen finished first with a final time of 2:03.65 and
Sara Ostensen followed her with a time of 2:05.88.
Grace Goddard also finished 10
th in the event.
Katelyn Hahn finished in 12
th place in the 200 Yard Backstroke while
Rachel Landry and
Kristin Kunnapas finished 15
th and 16
th respectively.
The Stags capped off their championship run with a win in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay as
Maria Nitti,
Sarah Herbold,
Kelly Cordes, and
Sara Ostensen clocked in at 3:28.61 and solidified their MAAC Championship victory.
Fairfield finished the Championships with a total of 718 points defeating second place Marist who finished with 658 points. Ostensen was named the MAAC Championship's Most Outstanding Swimmer and Rookie Swimmer of the Meet. Coach Bruno was selected by his peers as the 2018 MAAC Coach of the Year.
