Men's Basketball Closes Out Home Stand Against Wagner Saturday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team will close out its two-game home stand on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Wagner College in a non-conference game. The match up takes place at Webster Bank Arena and tips off at 1 pm.

Fairfield scored a season-high 87 points in its last outing against LIU Brooklyn, but a jumper from Raiquan Clark with one second left pushed the Blackbirds to an 89-87 win over the Stags. Fairfield led only once in the game as the Blackbirds scored the first five points in the contest and opened up a double-digit lead. Sophomore Jesus Cruz came off the bench to lead all Fairfield scorers with 17 points in addition to posting nine rebound and seven assists.

Senior Jonathan Kasibabu, who briefly put the Stags in front of LIU Brooklyn with a three-point play in the closing minute, just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Matija Milin netted 16 points as a reserve, while Neftali Alvarez recorded 10 points in the meeting. Alvarez has reached double figures in each of his first three games as a Stag and leads the team with a 14.7 scoring average. Landon Taliaferro posted 15 points in the LIU Brooklyn game which raised his scoring average to 12.7 points every forty minutes. Kasibabu owns a team-best 5.7 rebounding average.

The Seahawks opened the home portion of their 2018-19 schedule with a 90-58 win over SUNY Cortland which also served as the team's first win of the season. Romone Saunders paced the Wagner attack last Tuesday night with 26 points, netting 20 points in the first half. It was during that 20-minute interval that Wagner broke the game open by outscoring the visiting team, 54-16. Wagner saw four student-athletes reach double figures in this game which included Elijah Davis (17 points), Devin Liggeons (14 points), Jeff Coulanges (11 points), and Saunders.

Those four players rank among the top six scorers on the team with Saunders leading the way with his 17.7 points per game. Davis and A.J. Sumbry are next in line, each with 11.7 points every forty minutes. Liggeons completes the team's double-digit scoring foursome, chipping in with 10.7 points per contest. Wagner also performs well on the glass, averaging 41.7 rebounds per game. Sumbry, who comes off a 10-rebounds effort against SUMY Cortland, picks up 8.0 rebounds per game which leads all Seahawks.

During halftime of this game, the 2018 Fairfield Athletics Hall of Fame Class will be recognized, namely Colin Kiley (rugby), Tim Malay (ice hockey), Katie Mann-McCabe (volleyball), Michael O'Keeffe (soccer), and Lauren Thomas (field hockey). The 2000-01 women's basketball team and the 1972-73 men's basketball teams will also be honored during the Hall of Fame ceremony.

In addition, a free student shuttle will run between Alumni Hall and Webster Bank Arena beginning at noon through the end of the game.
