FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After fighting to a scoreless draw for 90 minutes, Siena's Carrie Krohn ended the match with a golden goal just 26 seconds into the first overtime period as the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team fell 1-0 to the Saints. The Stags had ample opportunities on the offensive side of the ball, recording 22 shots and a season-high nine corner kicks.
The Stags (5-5-2, 0-2-2 MAAC) tested Siena's (4-6-3, 1-1-2 MAAC) goalkeeper right away as
Sara Plowman put the first attempt of the match on net in the sixth minute. Fairfield would take five of the first six shots of the match, with
Liz Dumas' attempt in the 12th minute coming the closest to touch the back of the net, as her attempt was cleared aside by the Siena defense. That shot was one of three team saves the two teams combined for in the contest.
Fairfield also created chances on their nine corner kicks, with their best chance coming midway through the first half.
Alex Madden sent a corner into the box that hit off the chest of Dumas and found the foot of
Gabby Diodati, but her point blank shot was also saved by Siena's Taylor Dorado.
The Stags controlled the offensive flow for most of the contest, registering 11 shots in each half. Plowman took three consecutive shots in a three minute span, but all three attempts rolled wide of the net.
In the final minutes, the Stags had one last chance to find the opening goal. Madden's initial shot was blocked by the defense but came to the feet of Dumas who sent her shot wide of the net.
Defensively, the Fairfield back four limited Siena to just 10 shots in regulation and was responsible for two defensive saves.
Melanie Hingher kept the Fairfield offense moving as she created numerous turnovers on the defensive side.
In net, freshman
Aytana Muschajew made four saves while Siena's Dorado stopped six.
Siena needed just 26 seconds in the overtime period to find their winning goal as Jayanna Monds played a ball to the corner of the box where Krohn was able to beat the goalkeeper for the game winner.
The Stags out-shot Siena 22-11 and had a 9-5 advantage on corners.
Fairfield will wrap up their three game homestand when they welcome Canisius on Saturday at 1pm.
