Stags Fall to Marist in Season Finale

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team out-shot Marist 21-11, including an 11-2 clip in the first half, but the Red Foxes' Victoria Colatosti netted the only shot that mattered in the 58th minute as the Stags fell 1-0 at Marist in the season finale.

The Stags (7-9-2, 2-6-2 MAAC) came out firing, taking nine of the first 10 shots of the match, with Marist having their only shot attempt in that span blocked. Gabby Diodati, Sara Plowman, and Alex Madden all took a pair of shots inside the first 35 minutes of the match, but only one of Fairfield's 11 attempts was on target. Julia McGuire tallied the lone shot on goal in the 28th minute.

Fairfield ran their shot advantage to 15-2 after taking the first four attempts in the second half, but Marist was able to slowly gain control of the game. All three of Marist's next shot attempts were on target, with Megan DeFeo stopping the first two. The decisive goal came when Sperley dribbled up the middle of the field and sent a pass to Colatosti who beat the keeper.

The Stags had a brief opportunity to find the equalizer as Plowman, Hanley Courter, and the reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Brooke Hernon all took shots in a three minute span, but none could find the target.

Madden, who finishes the campaign with 12 goals, tying for fifth on the program's single-season list led the team with four shots. Madden currently leads the league by four goals, as she is trying to become the first Stag to lead the MAAC in scoring since 1999.

Aytana Muschajew wrapped up her freshman campaign with one save in 45 minutes while DeFeo picked up four stops in the final game of her collegiate career.
