Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fairfield Falls to Hot-Shooting Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team could not overcome the hot-shooting of the conference leading Quinnipiac Bobcats as they fell 77-45 at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the win, the Bobcats have now won 11-straight games including all nine Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) games this season.

Both teams shot well from 3-point range as the two squads combined to go 19-for-44 from distance, but Quinnipiac shot the lights out.

The Bobcats (15-5, 9-0 MAAC) hit 10 of their 15 shots in the first quarter, including six of their nine from 3-point range to open up a 24-7 lead after the first period. Two of those came off the hands of Taylor Herd, which closed out an 11-0 run midway through the quarter.

The Stags (7-11, 4-3 MAAC) faced more challenges in the second quarter with Casey Foley and Samantha Cooper each picking up their second personal fouls, causing them to sit for most of the quarter. However, the Stags answered the challenge. Sam Lewis hit two-straight 3-pointers in their absence and the Fairfield defense held Quinnipiac to a 17 percent shooting percentage (3-for-18) in the frame. On the other side, Fairfield found their offensive rhythm by hitting six of their 10 shots in the second frame.

However, the Stags could not bring the game within 17 points because of more foul trouble. Quinnipiac would take 12 free throws in the second frame, connecting on eight of those to keep a sizeable lead (39-21) at the half.

The third quarter started the same way with Jen Fay hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to get the Bobcats' lead over 20. Fairfield would also show their shooting skills, hitting four of their seven attempts from behind the arc in the third.

In total, the Stags actually had one of their best shooting games of the year, shooting 50 percent from long-range, including hitting six of their first 10 attempts in the game.

Quinnipiac was just a bit better from deep as they went 12-for-29 from behind the arc. The 12 3-pointers is the most the Stags have allowed this season.

Cooper led the Stags in both points (8) and rebounds (9), tying Lewis who tallied a career-high eight. Foley was just behind them with seven points. Out of the point guard position, Kendra Landy chipped in five points but also had a career-high seven rebounds and dished out five assists. Erika Schlosser also added seven points on 3-for-5 shooting from the floor.

The Stags will now play the middle game of their three game road trip at Siena on Monday night at 7pm.
