Field Hockey Drops Decision To Lafayette

Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team came up short in its second home game of the season, falling to Lafayette College by a 4-0 count at University Field on Friday afternoon. It's not quite clear if the team's week-long layoff came into play, last taking the pitch on September 1. In that game, the Stags seemed to find their groove against Hofstra University despite it being the team's third game in eight days, resulting in a 2-0 win.

This afternoon, Fairfield never seemed to find its rhythm offensively as Lafayette seemed determined to keep play in the Stags' defensive third by applying pressure throughout the game. The home team's defense did its best to relieve that pressure as best it could but the Leopards managed to find open space on several occasions and turned those chances into goals.

Lafayette puts its first goal of the game just seven minutes into the contest when Ellen Colburne secured a ball just outside the circle, took a step inside and released a wrist shot that went to the far corner beyond the reach of Fairfield goalkeeper Zoe Rosen. The lead doubled when Anna Steps found Kaitlynn Ewing open close to the goal. Ewing accepted the pass from Steps and made a quick turn toward the goal and posted a shot near side for her first career goal.

The Stags came out in the second half and made a strong bid in the opening minutes but a quick goal by Lafayette deflated Fairfield's efforts. Grace Angelella was responsible for Lafayette's third goal when she picked up a rebound off a save and pushed the ball back toward goal. The Leopards finished off the scoring in the game's 66th minute, netting an unassisted goal deep in the Fairfield circle.

Fairfield managed eight shots in the game with four of those attempts forcing Leopards goalkeeper Sarah Park to make saves.

The Stags return to action on Sunday when they host Columbia University at University Field. The game is scheduled for 1 pm start.
