Mayda Garcia Named MAAC Player of the Week

Sophomore posted a double-double in all three of Stags’ matches last week

EDISON, N.J. – After recording the first three double-doubles of her career this past weekend, Mayda Garcia has been selected as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Week. Garcia led Fairfield University Volleyball with 3.29 kills per set and added 3.14 digs per frame in three matches at the Rambler Challenge in Chicago.

"Mayda did a great job this weekend. She took some really good swings in all three matches," said Head Coach Todd Kress. "The opportunity to play all six rotations for us for the first time was great experience for her, and I couldn't have asked for more than what she gave us this weekend."

Garcia totaled 46 kills and 44 digs in 14 sets of action as the Stags defeated host Loyola Chicago and were edged in five sets by both Milwaukee and defending Southern Conference Champion Samford. She set a pair of career highs throughout the weekend, tallying 18 kills against Loyola Chicago and recording 17 digs against Samford. Garcia also landed two service aces and had a hand in six Fairfield blocks.

On the season to date, Garcia ranks third in the MAAC with 3.08 kills per set and has tallied 2.28 digs per stanza through 25 sets of work.

Fairfield (3-3) returns to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 6 for a crosstown trip to Sacred Heart. The Pioneers sit at 2-4 following a pair of 1-2 weekends at James Madison and Harvard to begin the campaign.

Action then comes to George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall for the first time on Sept. 8-9 for the Fairfield Invitational. The Stags will host Washington State (5-1) on both nights of the tournament in addition to a Saturday afternoon clash with New Hampshire (1-6). The event features three teams that reached the NCAA postseason in 2016 with the Cougars and America East Champion Wildcats tangling with the host Stags.
