ALBANY, N.Y. – Coming off an important win against 25th-ranked Monmouth University, the Fairfield University field hockey team faced their second straight nationally-ranked opponent as they took on the University of Albany. Unfortunately, the result was not the same as the Stags fell to the 19th-ranked Great Danes by a count of 8-2.
The Stags struck first as
Jamie Appelberg put in the assist from Andrea Soler giving them a 1-0 advantage early in the game. UAlbany took control of the scoring as they countered with three straight goals. The equalizing goal was scored by Cosima Rocktaeschel as she was able to squeeze a shot through the defense in front of the goal. Just six minutes later, Rocktaeschel struck again after gaining control of the assist from Kelsey Bridell and chipping in the go-ahead goal. UAlbany's third straight goal came after they earned a penalty stroke off a Stag violation. Frederike Helmke put in the stroke to take a 3-1 lead. The Stags were able to inch themselves closer with a goal from
Danielle Profita as she put in the assist from
Hannah Pike in the closing minutes of the half.
Although Fairfield put up a strong fight, the Great Danes dominated the second half, scoring five goals. The first two goals came off the stick of Dana Bozek as she increased the lead to 5-2. Cosima Rocktaeschel scored her third goal of the game in the 58
th minute. Megan Ma dribbled through the defense to score the unassisted goal and Kelsey Bridell capped off the scoring chipping in the shot into the left corner of the net.
UAlbany outshot Fairfield 18-6 and had nine penalty corners while the Stags were not awarded any.
The Stags will return home to University Field on Friday at 4 p.m. to take on Bryant University for their third MAAC contest of the season.
