Stags Open MAAC Home Weekend with Sweep of Manhattan

Day records a double-double in the straight set win

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Volleyball improved to 10-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and won its 11th consecutive match overall with a sweep of visiting Manhattan on Saturday afternoon on George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall. The Stags claimed the match by set scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-21.

Fairfield (15-6) was led by a double-double performance from Skyler Day. The reigning MAAC Player of the Year hit .367 on the outside, posting a match-best 12 kills to go along with 11 digs. Her foil on the outside and fellow senior co-captain Megan Theiller added 11 kills and just missed a double-double of her own with nine digs.

In the middle, Kaylie Butts posted 11 kills – highlighted by a 6-for-6 showing in set three to help the Stags put the match away. Butts hit .526 on the day and added three blocks to the defensive effort.

Seven different hitters contributed to the scoring, rounded out by three kills from Nora Quinn, two apiece for Kaitlyn Fisher and Mayda Garcia and the match-ending finisher off the swing of Sonja Radulovic.

Manuela Nicolini dished out 23 assists from the setter spot and added two kills of her own as the Stags hit .286 as a unit. Senior co-captain Sydney Buckley returned to action for the first time since the opening weekend of the season and handed out 10 assists in two sets of work.

In the back row, Day and libero Taylor Rudeen shared the team high with 11 digs apiece. Fairfield also rang up nine team blocks with Nicolini getting a hand on five rejections. Butts, Quinn and Luci Albertson were each a part of three send-backs as Fairfield's defense limited the Jaspers to a .082 hitting percentage, marking the fifth straight match that the Stags have kept their opponents below a .100 clip.

Just as they did in the Sept. 17 sweep of Manhattan in Riverdale, the Stags landed eight service aces in today's victory. Garcia headed that effort with three winners complemented by two from Rudeen and one point each off the serves of Albertson, Buckley and Day.

Manhattan (1-22, 1-9 MAAC) was led by four kills each from Sandra Lozanova and Mary Donnelly. Zoe Lindsay handled setting duties for the Jaspers and doled out 19 assists. Defensively, Manhattan was guided by a match-best 14 digs from libero Alyssa Rehrer, with Meagan Miller collecting the Jaspers' lone block.

Tomorrow afternoon at Alumni Hall is the Stags' annual Herd for a Cure match as a part of the year-long partnership between Fairfield Athletics and the Norma Pfriem Breast Center. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness. Pink t-shirts will be for sale and donations for the Center will be collected in the lobby of Alumni Hall as the Stags host Iona at 1 p.m. The Gaels are 10-14 overall and 8-4 in the MAAC after a 3-1 win this afternoon at Quinnipiac.
