Women's Basketball Hosts Kids' Day Out

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The local area schools and several elementary school kids will get to cheer and scream for a team that is fresh off one of their biggest comeback victories in program history. The Fairfield University women's basketball team will host their third annual Kids' Day Out on Friday at 11am against Siena when they welcome several elementary schools from around the area. Admission will also be free for any fan who wants to catch the jovial excitement at Alumni Hall.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Stags are coming off one of the biggest comebacks in program history as they erased an 18-point deficit to overtake Monmouth 71-68 on the road. The play of the game came from Kelsey Carey, who led the team with 20 points but none were bigger than her final three. With 11 seconds to go, Carey took a dribble behind the 3-point line and released a shot and in the process leaned into her defender to draw the foul. She would calmly drill all three free throws which turned a two point deficit into a one point lead. Macey Hollenshead would be the Stag to give the Stags their three point advantage by nailing a couple of her own free throws with four seconds left. Fairfield fell behind by 18 with 7:28 left in the second quarter after Monmouth, the league's leading 3-point shooting team connected on nine long range shots during the first half. The Fairfield defense would clamp down on their shooters in the second half allowing the Hawks to shoot just 2-for-10 from behind the arc. Carey and Casey Smith were pivotal in the victory as the duo was responsible for 37 of the team's final 52 points.

IT'S KIDS' DAY!: The Fairfield University women's basketball program will welcome kids from the local schools as they host the third annual Kids' Day Out against Siena. This event is a league wide program that allows local kids to not only see a Division I basketball event, but also have the opportunity to come on to a college campus. After the game, selected elementary school students will have the chance to be a part of a press conference with selected members of the team to show the inner workings of a sporting event. This is the third year that the Stags will be hosting this event. Fairfield defeated Saint Peter's in the inaugural game but dropped a decision to Manhattan last year. In addition to Kids' Day Out, all fans will receive free admission to the Friday afternoon contest.

THE SAINTS SCOUTING REPORT: The 18 point victory against Niagara not only marked the largest win for the Saints this season, it also snapped a seven game losing streak that started after the Saints defeated Fairfield on the road. Four Saints reached double figures in that contest with Kollyns Scarbrough leading the way with her first double-double that consisted of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Shooter Jackie Benitez is still the leading scorer for the Saints but has cooled down considerably after a torrid start of the season that saw her lead the nation in 3-pointers per game over the first few weeks of the season. The guard still leads the MAAC with averaging 2.9 3-pointers per outing, a number that is 32nd in the country. For the season, she is shooting .306 from long range which is behind only Denisha Petty-Evans' .357 clip.

UP NEXT: The Stags will have another quick turnaround when they host Manhattan on Sunday at 2pm.
