Theiller and Bechtold Earn MAAC Weekly Awards

EDISON, N.J. – After posting a 4-0 weekend at the Crusader Classic, the Fairfield University volleyball team has earned a pair of weekly awards from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Junior outside hitter Megan Theiller was named the MAAC Player of the Week, and sophomore libero Mallory Bechtold was tabbed as the MAAC Libero of the Week.

The Stags needed just 13 sets to claim their four wins in Worcester, sweeping Brown, Bryant and host Holy Cross while taking a 3-1 decision over UMass Lowell. Fairfield improved to 5-3 following the Crusader Classic.

Theiller earns Player of the Week laurels of the second time in her career and the first time in 2016. She earned All-Tournament Team honors at the Crusader Classic, leading Fairfield with 4.00 kills per set and adding 2.38 digs per frame in the back row. Theiller hit .290 on the outside, totaling 52 kills with just 12 errors on 138 swings. She reached double figures in all four matches, including 16 finishers in the 3-1 win over UMass Lowell. Theiller registered a double-double in the Friday sweep of Bryant with 11 kills and 11 digs. She capped the weekend with 13 kills on .429 hitting (13-1-28) in a straight-set win over Holy Cross. Theiller filled out her weekend statline with three assists, four service aces and one block.

Bechtold is the MAAC Libero of the Week for the second time in her career and the first time this season. She helmed the back row as the Stags put together a 4-0 weekend at the Crusader Classic. Bechtold averaged 4.38 digs per frame, racking up 57 total digs in 13 sets of work. She reached double figures in all four matches, including a weekend-best 18 digs in the four-set win over UMass Lowell. Bechtold rounded out the weekend with two service aces and five assists.

This weekend, action comes home to George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall for the first time in 2016 for the Fairfield Invitational. The Stags will host Sacred Heart, James Madison and Villanova in the two-day, round-robin event on Sept. 9-10.
