FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team improved to 2-2 in the MAAC with a 10-9 victory over Siena on Saturday afternoon. The Stags trailed 7-9 midway through the second half, but took over the game from then on scoring the final three goals.
The Stags came out firing, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the opening eight minutes. Maeve Quinn started the scoring with her twelfth of the year, followed by unassisted goals from Kelly Camardo and Brenna Connolly.
Siena answered back with two goals of their own, but Colleen Reynolds pushed the lead to 4-2 in favor of the home side. The Saints again cut the lead to one with a goal by Sarah Croutier, but the Stags quickly pushed the lead to two with eight and a half to play in the half. It was Reynolds second of the day followed by a goal from Lily Crager to cap the 3-1 scoring run.
Siena did not settle after that cutting the Fairfield lead down to 6-5 at the half. And in the second, they used their momentum to spark a 4-1 scoring run to create a 9-7 advantage with 16:18 to play.
The lone goal in the opening minutes for Fairfield belonged to Alex Fehmel, who would prove to be the difference in the latter stages having a hand in all four second half goals.
With the Stags down by two, Fehmel took it herself and fired a shot past the keeper to cut the lead to one. The tying goal came at the 9:47 mark with Fehmel finding Reynolds for the goal. The junior then took a free position shot at 5:35 to put the Stags up for good, 10-9.
Senior goalkeeper Chelsey Sidaras faced 21 shots, making nine saves on the day. While the offense was led by Fehmel's four points, followed by Reynolds' three goals. Quinn, Crager, Connolly, and Camardo all recorded one score with Mascera tallying an assist.
Said Head Coach Laura Field on the win, "This was a complete effort from every member of our team. We had exceptional performances from Colleen Reynolds and Jenna Fuchs on the draw, Alex Fehmel on attack and Chelsey Sidaras in the goal. It was a much needed and hard fought win."
Fairfield showed their stregth winning the draw control battle 12-8. Indivdually, Reynolds collected five while Fuchs and Crager each grabbed three.
