FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team closed out their 2016 regular season campaign with a 13-8 victory over Manhattan on Wednesday afternoon.
The win improved their league record to 4-4 and with Iona losing to Monmouth, the Stags clinched the No. 5 seed in the MAAC Tournament. Fairfield will play No. 4 seeded Niagara on Saturday, April 30 in the first round.
On the afternoon, the Stags got three early scores to give them a 3-0 lead, seven minutes in to the contest. Alex Fehmel got things started with a free position goal, followed by a free position goal from Riley Hellstein. And on the third goal, Hellstein found Lily Crager for the score.
The Jaspers got the next two on the board, cutting the deficit to one before Crager notched her second of the day. Over the next 19 minutes of game action the two sides traded goals with Fairfield never leading by more than two at any point.
Fairfield led 7-5 at the halftime break and came out in the second stanza getting an early goal from Julieanne Mascera, her second of the day.
Once again, Manhattan answered to keep the deficit at two, but this time the Stags answered with three straight. Fairfield saw goals Fehmel, Kelly Camardo, and Taylor Mitchell to push their lead to five with 20 minutes to play.
The Stags would allow just two more scores from the home side the remainder of the game while also tacking on two more before the final whistle blew. Fehmel went on to notch her fifth of the day while Mitchell tallied her second to give Fairfield the 13-8 victory.
Fairfield's offense was paced by Fehmel's six points, while six other Stags registered at least one point.
Chelsey Sidaras played all 60 minutes in cage making seven saves on the day.
"We had great performances from Fehmel on the attack and Colleen on the draw. This was a hard fought game and a solid way to close out the regular season," said Head Coach Laura Field.
The Stags will head to Niagara for the First Round of the MAAC Championships on Saturday, April 30.
