FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team fell to 1-1 on the season after a 13-8 loss to Boston University on Saturday afternoon. A Terrier run of five straight goals beginning at the 1:27 mark in the first half put the visitors up by five and they never looked back.
Early on, the two sides traded goals. The first goal came from Mickinzie Larivee then from Fairfield's Maeve Quinn. With the score notched at one apiece Ally Adams would put the Terriers up 3-1 with two straight unassisted tallies.
With just under nine minutes to play in the opening stanza, Colleen Reynolds notched her first of the season with a hard run at the net. Then about five minutes later she netted a free position shot right past keeper ,Christine Laible, to tie the game at four. That would be the final tie of the game as Boston University would go on to score the next five.
Molly Kern nabbed a pass from Ally Adams to break the tie, then Adams scored her own with 20 seconds remaining in the half. The Terriers wouldn't settle there as they pushed the pace to get another before the halftime whistle. Taylor Hardison passed off a stoppage of play to a streaking Jenny Thompson who beat Chelsey Sidaras for the goal.
The Stags headed out of the break down 7-4, but the Terriers would add two more to their lead just four minutes into the second half. Julieanne Mascera stopped the run with two goals of her own. The first unassisted at the 23:35 mark then a free position shot less than 20 seconds later brought Fairfield within three.
But yet again, the Terriers answered back with two more goals to bring their lead back to five. Riley Hellstein and Alex Fehmel each got on the scoreboard in the second half, but Boston University never let up always coming back with a goal of their own.
The Terriers defense held Fairfield scoreless for the final 9:44 of the game to claim the 13-8 victory. That defense was led by Christine Laible who posted 10 saves in net in her first start of the season. Around her, the Terriers held the Stags to just 23 shots on the day and only nine in the second half.
Fairfield was paced by Mascera's three goals, followed by Reynolds with two. Quinn, Hellstein, and Fehmel all recorded one goal apiece. Sidaras made the start in net facing 36 shots and making 12 saves on the day.
The Stags won the groundball battle 24-17, but were beat on the draw 16-6.
"Today was a tough loss against a good BU team. While we had good effort across the board our execution was sloppier than it needed to be to win the game," said Head Coach Laura Field. "We'll look towards this week's practices to clean up the details and prepare for Columbia."
Fairfield will have a quick turnaround as they host Columbia on Wednesday at 3:00 pm.
