BALTIMORE, Md. - There's the adage that two out of three ain't bad and that about summarizes the men's basketball three-game road trip. After defeating Dartmouth and NEC defending regular-season champ Wagner on the road, the Stags suffered an 81-66 loss at Loyola University (Md.), the team's first setback of the season.
The team received several strong efforts in the decision, including a double-double from Amadou Sidibe with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Matija Milin (15 points), Tyler Nelson (13 points), and Jonathan Kasibabu (10 points) also reached double figures for the Stags.
Four different starters combined for the first 10 points of the game which allowed the Stags to open a 10-2 lead just three minutes into the contest. Amadou Sidibe, Matija Milin, and Jerome Segura also scored during the opening run. The advantage improved to 10 points after Sidibe's jumper pushed the score to 21-11 with 13 minutes left in the half.
Fairfield's biggest lead stood at 12 points after Nelson's layup ran the score to 27-15 with nine minutes remaining. The Stags still stood in double digits when Milin's layup made the score 31-20 with a little over six minutes on the clock. From that point, Loyola began to cut into the Fairfield lead over the next four minutes and eventually caught and passed the visitors to secure its first lead at 36-35 with three minutes left.
Nelson immediately recaptured the lead on a pair of free throws which helped send the Stags into halftime with a narrow 41-39 advantage. Sidibe doubled the Fairfield margin with a pair of charity tosses to start the second half, a lead which the team carried for the first four minutes of the half.
Trailing 47-43, the Greyhounds scored 10 of the next 12 points which not only erased the deficit but gave the home team its own four-point edge at 53-49. But Loyola did not stop there as the team continued to build on that slight advantage, using a 19-6 run to take command at 72-55 with seven minutes remaining, the team's biggest lead of the game.
Fairfield whittled a few points off the lead at various times in the closing minutes but ended up falling by the final margin of 15 points. Jarred Jones also picked up a double-double in the game, leading all Loyola scorers with 24 points along with 10 rebounds.
The Stags will return home for the first time in two weeks when they host Army West Point on Saturday, November 26. The game is set for a 2 p.m. tip at Webster Bank Arena.
