Day and Bechtold Earn MAAC Weekly Honors

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After a 3-0 week of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action for the Fairfield University volleyball team, the Stags have collected a pair of weekly laurels from the conference. Skyler Day was selected as MAAC Player of the Week and Mallory Bechtold was tabbed as the MAAC Libero of the Week.

In this past week's wins over Marist, Niagara and Canisius, Skyler Day averaged 5.00 kills per set on .294 hitting. She helped the cause defensively with 2.33 digs per set and two blocks and also served up three aces. In Wednesday's four-set win at Marist, Day sent home 18 kills and landed just shy of a double-double with nine digs. Against Niagara on Saturday, she hammered 19 kills – the most by a Stag in a three-set match since 2013 – on .412 hitting with seven digs, two blocks and two aces. Day capped the week playing just two sets in the Sunday sweep of Canisius, compiling eight kills on .353 hitting with five digs.

For the season, Day leads the MAAC with 3.90 kills and 4.33 points per set. She also rates eighth in the conference in service aces (0.30 per set). Day rounds out her season statline with 2.05 digs per stanza. A 2015 First Team All-MAAC honoree and the 2016 MAAC Preseason Player of the Week, Day collects weekly honors from the conference for the first time in her career.

Mallory Bechtold helmed the back row in the Stags' unbeaten week with 5.50 digs per set. She also aided the offense with 1.10 assists per frame and chipped in to the scoring effort with four service aces. Her week was highlighted by a near double-double as she totaled 15 digs and a career-high eight assists in the Saturday sweep of Niagara. Bechtold also notched 21 digs in a four-set win at Marist and 19 digs in a 3-0 triumph over Canisius.

Bechtold ranks sixth in the MAAC this fall with 4.18 digs per frame. She earns Libero of the Week honors for the second time this season and the third time in her career.

After last week's 3-0 performance, the Stags are last remaining team unbeaten in MAAC play with a 7-0 mark. Fairfield has won eight straight matches overall to surge to a 14-5 record on the season.

This week, Fairfield begins a three-match road swing with a Wednesday trip to Siena. The Stags will also visit Quinnipiac on Saturday, Oct. 8 and crosstown foe Sacred Heart on Wednesday, Oct. 12 before returning to Alumni Hall to host Siena and Marist on Oct. 15-16.
