Pires Sets Two School Records

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University swimming and diving teams competed at Iona on Saturday afternoon in their final meet before the MAAC Championships. Both teams were outscored by Iona with the women falling 199-95 and the men falling 203-75. But the highlight of the meet for the Stags was junior diver Daniel Pires.

Pires broke school records in both the 1-meter (297.80) and 3-meter (317.05) dives. The junior broke both records by scoring 336.90 and 327.40 respectively. He previously held the second best scores in Fairfield history in both events sitting just behind Taylor Stecko '10 who had held the records since December 5, 2009. His scores today also qualified him for ECAC competition as well as NCAA Zone A competition.

For women's diving, both Leah Pawelczyk and Jane Rice set personal bests with their dives. Pawelczyk posted a 194.47 in the 1-meter and a 214.57 in the 3-meter. Rice posted the top scores in both events with a 222.75 in the 1-meter and a 252.90 in the 3-meter.

In swimming action, Connor Daly led the Stags with two individual victories. In the 200y Butterfly he finished first with a time of 1:55.08 and in the 500y Freestyle he posted the top time and a new personal best of 4:46.49. The senior also placed fourth in the 100y Freestyle (51.91).

Andrew Robinson grabbed a third place finish in the 1000y Freestyle posting a time of 10:17.69.

For the women, Grace Goddard placed second in the 200y Butterfly with a time of 2:15.43. Donna Lam placed third in both the 1000y Freestyle (11:15.85) and the 50y Freestyle (25.89). Freshman Emily Vlass earned third place in the 100y Breaststroke finishing in 1:13.62.

Fairfield will now begin to make their final preparations for the MAAC Championships which will kick off on February 10.
