Stags Sweep Delaware State to Cap Saturday Split in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA – The Fairfield University volleyball team hit a scorching .325 – led by the trio of Skyler Day, Megan O'Sullivan and Megan Theiller – to sweep Delaware State in the Stags' finale at the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Penn Invitational. Earlier in the day, Fairfield was upended by perennial CAA power Towson in four sets.

After the Saturday split, the Stags will enter MAAC play next weekend with an overall record of 4-5. Fairfield visits Niagara and Canisius on Sept. 19-20 before hosting its first conference match of the fall on Saturday, Sept. 26 when Quinnipiac comes to Alumni Hall at 1 p.m.

"We had good energy in the last match today, and it's good to end our pre-conference schedule on a high note," said Head Coach Todd Kress. "We are all looking forward to the week of practice and then kicking off the MAAC slate in Buffalo next weekend."

Towson 3, Fairfield 1 (25-19, 25-18, 24-26, 25-17)

Fairfield began the day with a four-set loss to Towson (8-1), a yearly contender for the CAA title. The Stags were led by a double-double from Theiller, who sent home 12 kills and picked up 12 digs. Day added 14 digs while nearing a double-double of her own with nine kills.

Setters Kiley Lingenfelter and Sydney Buckley ran the Fairfield offense, doling out 16 and 12 assists, respectively. O'Sullivan slammed down six kills, and Hadley Orr had four to supplement the Stags' attack.

On the defensive end, Mallory Bechtold notched a team-high 15 digs from the libero spot. O'Sullivan guided the effort at the net with a hand in five of Fairfield's eight blocks. Day and Sydney Williams were a part of two send-backs apiece.

The Tigers were led by 19 kills from Jocelyn Kuilan and 13 from Haley Pa'akaula. Anna Holehouse led all players with 25 digs.

Fairfield 3, Delaware State 0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-19)

The Stags rebounded quickly with a convincing sweep of Delaware State in the nightcap. In this outing, Day and Theiller each registered a double-double on the outside. Day posted 15 kills on .464 hitting (15-2-28) with 13 digs to lead Fairfield in all three categories. Theiller added 11 kills with a .357 hitting percentage (11-1-28) and lifted 10 digs to round out her second double-double of the day.

The Stags' offensive efficiency continued in the middle where O'Sullivan posted 13 kills at a .360 clip (13-4-25). Nine players had kills in total for Fairfield, including four off the bench for Chanel Chooper, two for Williams, Lingenfelter, Nora Quinn and Kaitlyn Fisher and one for Orr.

Lingenfelter and Buckley were charged with spreading the ball around and ended the sweep with 22 and 19 assists, respectively.

Defensively, the Stags tallied five blocks and held the Hornets to a .064 hitting percentage. Fairfield also scored four points from the serving game, with two aces for Day and one winner apiece by Theiller and Lingenfelter.

Jasmine Jackson sent home a team-high seven kills for Delaware State (2-8). Taylor Marshall dished out 15 assits, and Alliyah McBean had a match-leading 20 assists.
