Greg Downing '07 Selected to U.S. National Indoor Team

BALTIMORE – Fairfield University men's lacrosse great Greg Downing '07 was among the 23 players selected to the 2015 U.S. Men's Indoor National Team, as announced by US Lacrosse. Downing and Team USA will compete in the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Indoor Championship from Sept. 18-27 in Onondaga Nation and Syracuse, N.Y.

"After an intense, competitive camp weekend, the Team USA coaching staff is very excited about the roster that will represent the United States in Syracuse," said head coach Tony Resch. "We have a balance of veterans and newcomers, and we look forward to continuing our preparations for the 2015 World Games in the coming weeks. We recognize the great challenge we have in front of us, and embrace that challenge. The players, coaches, and staff will do everything within our power to represent the United States with class and courage, on and off the floor."

Downing, who current plays professional for both the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse and the Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League, was the 2005 Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) Offensive Player of the Year as the Stags won the conference championship to advance to the NCAA postseason. He ranks fourth all-time in career goals at Fairfield with 101 and fifth in career points with 141. The only three-time USILA All-America selection in program history, Downing was also the GWLL Rookie of the Year in 2004.

After his career at Fairfield, Downing was the first-ever Stag chosen in the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft. The sixth overall pick by the Los Angeles Riptide in the 2007 draft, he remains the only first round pick in program history.

Downing, who is one of six players returning from the 2011 bronze-medal winning U.S. team, was inducted into the Fairfield Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.
