Box Score ALBANY, N.Y. – Marcus Gilbert scored a game-high 12 points, all of which came in the second half, as the Fairfield University men's basketball team fell to Saint Peter's University 63-33 in the first round of the 2015 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men's Basketball Championship.
The first half belonged to Tyler Nelson as he was the only Stag to score in the opening 20 minutes. He posted the first five points of the game but Fairfield's offense stalled from that point and managed just two points the rest of the half. Those points came from Nelson's jumper at the 9:15 mark that closed the Peacocks lead to 8-7.
Saint Peter's closed out the final nine minutes with a 12-0 run that gave the seventh-seeded team a 13-point halftime lead. Coleman Johnson may not have scored in the game but he still put together a strong first half with four blocks, a steal, and two rebounds before picking up his second foul. Johnson blocked three of Saint Peter's first four shots in the game. Fairfield made two of 21 shots from the floor in the first half with Nelson netting two of his six attempts.
Fairfield had more success in the second half as six different Stags found the scoring column, led by Gilbert's 12 points. Nelson tacked on two more points to his total while Steve Smith added four points to the total. Coleman Johnson finished off the night with perhaps the best overall line on the box score for Fairfield as the junior posted two points, four rebounds, four blocks, and a steal in 22 minutes before fouling out late in the second half.
Saint Peter's placed two players in double figures led by Quadir Welton who came off the bench to score a game-high 13 points. Trevis Wyche netted 12 points, also coming off the bench as Saint Peter's tallied 31 bench points.
