Men's Lacrosse Returns to Rafferty Stadium to Host Manhattan on Saturday

The Fairfield University men's lacrosse team looks to build on the momentum of Wednesday's win at Providence as the Stags host Manhattan. The Stags and Jaspers will faceoff from Rafferty Stadium at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21.

Same Faces, New Places: Due to the likelihood of inclement weather on Saturday evening, Saturday's game has been moved from an evening contest in Riverdale to the friendly confines of Rafferty Stadium with an 11 a.m. start time.

Last Time Out: The Stags scored six unanswered goals in the third quarter to power past host Providence, 10-6, on Wednesday afternoon. Fairfield's six-goal run broke a 4-4 tie as the defense kept Providence off the board for a stretch of 21:59 of game time spanning the third and fourth quarters.

Eight Stags scored in the club's first win of 2015, including two goals apiece from Dave Fleming and Tristan Sperry. Also scoring for Fairfield were Joe Rodrigues (man-up), Bryan Barry, Charlie Schnider, Colin McLinden (man-up), Drew Murray and Drew Federico.

McLinden also dealt a pair of assists as a part of a three-point day, moving into a tie for 10th all-time at Fairfield with 111 career points. Last spring, McLinden posted 22 goals and 29 assists to complete the first 50-point season for a Stag since 1999.

Will Fox turned in a strong showing in the faceoff 'X', winning 12 of his 16 attempts and scooping up six ground balls. Sperry picked up four ground balls, while Barry, Federico and TJ Neubauer had three apiece.

Defensively, Brad Nordstrom earned his first collegiate victory with 10 saves. The freshman goalkeeper also snagged a pair of ground balls. Max Buchanan and Conor Barr helmed the defense and each caused two turnovers.

Today's Matchup: The Stags will square off with Manhattan for the eighth time in program history on Saturday. Fairfield is 7-0 all-time against the Jaspers in a series dating back to 1996 - the Stags' first-ever MAAC Championship season and Manhattan's inaugural campaign at the NCAA varsity level. The clubs played annually from 1996-2001, and the series was revisited last spring with an 18-4 Stags' win in the only meeting during the tenure of Head Coach Andy Copelan.

Scouting Manhattan: Saturday was meant to mark the home opener for the 0-2 Jaspers, who picked up losses at Stony Brook and Princeton to begin their 2015 slate. Tabbed for sixth of seven teams in the MAAC Preseason Poll, Manhattan posted a 5-10 record last spring and missed the MAAC postseason on a tiebreaker as one of five teams logjammed in the standings at 3-3.

Jimmy Rogers has accounted for three of the Jaspers' seven goals through two outings and adds an assist to round out his team-leading four points. Andrew Gresham has two goals for Manhattan.

Two goalkeepers have seen action between the posts thus far. Jonathan Cottrell (22.00 GAA, .257 save pct.) started the season opener at Stony Brook and was relieved at the intermission by Michael Wiatrak. Wiatrak finished the meeting with the Seawolves and helmed the net for the entirety of the Princeton game en route to a 14.67 GAA and .421 save percentage.

Head Coach Steve Manitta is in his third season at the helm in Riverdale. The former head coach at Division II Mercy and student-athlete at Division III SUNY Morrisville owns a 9-23 record with the Jaspers.

The Stags and Jaspers have not yet played any common opponents in 2015, but Fairfield's next outing is a visit to a Stony Brook team that hosted and defeated Manhattan, 19-4, earlier this spring. The Jaspers will also travel to challenge CAA clubs Hofstra and Delaware later this season.

Road Warriors: Today's game is the Stags' second stop on a five-game road trip - the longest string of consecutive true road games in Fairfield men's lacrosse history. The Stags will also visit Stony Brook, Yale and Bucknell before returning to the turf of Rafferty Stadium on Saturday, March 14 for a clash with Colgate.

We Now Return to Our Regularly Scheduled Programming: The Stags will resume what was originally a five-game road swing on Saturday, Feb. 28 with a noon trip to Stony Brook. Fairfield will also trek to Yale and Bucknell before returning to the turf of Rafferty Stadium on Saturday, March 14 for a clash with Colgate.

Tickets for the meeting with the Raiders and all of the Stags' remaining home contests are available at FairfieldStags.com/tix.
