Men's Lacrosse Visits Providence on Wednesday for First Road Trip of 2015

The Fairfield University men's lacrosse team hits the road for the first time in 2015 with a trip to Providence. The Wednesday outing, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday but postponed due to inclement weather, will be the Friars' regular season opener.

Fairfield's Last Time Out: The Stags began 2015 on Saturday, Feb. 14 with a 10-9 loss to visiting Holy Cross on Opening Day at Rafferty Stadium before a crowd of 2,365 fans. The Crusaders notched the game-winner and claimed their only lead of the contest with 3:40 to play in the fourth quarter.

TJ Neubauer scored a game-high four goals for Fairfield, including three in the second half. The first two goals in Rafferty Stadium history went to Tristan Sperry, who recorded a first-half hat trick for the Stags in addition to two assists. Colin McLinden and Dave Fleming also found the back of the net, with helpers dished out by Drew FedericoDrew Murray and Charlie Schnider.

On the other half of the field, Bryan Barry scooped up four ground balls, and Max Buchanan registered a pair of ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Brad Nordstrom made nine saves between the posts in his collegiate debut.

Louis DiGiacomo and Will Fox shared duties in the faceoff 'X' and each posted an above-.500 mark. DiGiacomo went 8-for-14 on faceoffs, and Fox was 5-for-9 in his first game with the Stags.

The Matchup: The Stags are challenging Providence for the 15th time in program history. Fairfield is 10-4 all-time against the Friars dating back to the Stags' inaugural season as an NCAA varsity program in 1993. Last season's 14-11 victory for Providence was the only meeting in the series during the tenure of Head Coach Andy Copelan. The clubs met annually from 1993-1999 and again from 2003-2008.

Scouting Providence: Today's game will open the 2015 slate for Providence, which finished at 4-11 last season with a 1-7 mark in the Big East. The Friars are looking to replace the offensive firepower provided by their top four scorers last spring (86g, 45a) -- three of whom were lost to graduation while the fourth, Alex Corboy, is a transfer student now suiting up for the Stags.

Among returners, Greg FitzMaurice netted 11 goals with five assists last season. The most experienced goalkeeper is Peter Badgley, who totaled 65:48 between the posts in 2014 with 10 saves and 15 goals allowed (13.68 GAA).

Head Coach Chris Gabrielli is entering his third season at the helm. The former assistant coach at Duke and student-athlete at Massachusetts owns a 13-20 record with the Friars.

Road Warriors: Today's game begins the longest string of consecutive true road games in Fairfield men's lacrosse history. The Stags will also visit Manhattan, Stony Brook, Yale and Bucknell before returning to the turf of Rafferty Stadium on Saturday, March 14 for a clash with Colgate.

The Stags' 1996 squad played six consecutive games away from their home turf, but that trek included four neutral-site contests.

Up Next: The Stags' five-game road swing continues on Saturday, Feb. 21 with a trip to Manhattan. The contest from Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y. begins at 5 p.m. Fairfield will also trek to Stony Brook, Yale and Bucknell before returning to the turf of Rafferty Stadium on Saturday, March 14 for a clash with Colgate.
