Box Score

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The Stags showed resilience. The Stags showed heart. Each time Wagner College seemed to take control, the Fairfield University men's basketball team fought back. But in the end, the Stags could not overcome a strong effort by Wagner, finally succumbing to the visiting team by a 76-64 score at Webster Bank Arena.

Guard Jerome Segura paced the Fairfield offense with a career-best 17 points, putting on a show with several acrobatic shots that brought the crowd to its feet several times. Matija Milin also showed well off the bench as his 10 points extended his double-figure scoring streak to five games. And, Coleman Johnson tied his personal best with 11 rebounds in 27 minutes of work.

These individual performances nearly enabled the Stags to overcome their second-half deficit but Wagner seemed to have an answer whenever Fairfield pulled to within a possession. At the heart of Wagner's offense was Corey Henson who led all scorers with 18 points. He made all six of his three-point attempts in this game and finished 6 of 9 overall. He also added four assists and three steals to the Seahawk cause.

The Stags opened the game with seven of the first nine points with three different student-athletes putting points on the board. Fairfield remained in front for the first eight minutes of the game before finally relinquishing the lead after Michael Carey netted a three-point field goal to push Wagner in front, 13-11. Tyler Nelson tied the game with a layup and Milin added a three pointer to make it 16-13 in Fairfield's favor. The lead would reach as many as six points at 22-16 with seven minutes remaining, but Wagner ended the half with a 16-4 run.

After taking a six-point halftime lead, Wagner managed to build nine points several times in the second half. But the Stags battled back and came within a possession. First, the Seahawks took a 41-32 lead with 17:25 remaining before Fairfield pulled within a point after a layup by Segura made the score 50-49.

Wagner answered with eight straight points to regain its nine-point edge at 58-49 with five minutes left with Michael Carey's three-pointer and a three-point play by Romone Saunders doing on consecutive possessions doing most of the damage. Once again, Fairfield came back and made the game interesting by coming with four points at 58-54 with 4:36 on the clock. Wagner put the game out of reach with a 10-2 run that gave the visitors their biggest lead at 70-58 at the 1:02 mark.
