Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University field hockey team fell to Drexel, 3-0, this afternoon at University Field. The Stags are now 1-1 when playing at home this season.
Fairfield started off strong defensively, allowing only one shot on goal for the first 10 minutes. Despite two back-to-back penalty corners by the Dragons, at 26:37 and 27:27, Fairfield was able to keep the ball out of the net until Drexel's Meghan Plank scored at 33:29. The score was 1-0 in favor of the Dragons heading into halftime.
Fairfield continued to battle in the second half, with goalkeeper Emma Ball saving three shots in the first 10 minutes. The Stags answered with two shots of their own but neither was able to put Fairfield on the board. Play continued until Drexel's Mary Lynam netted a goal off a scrum in front of the net at 55:58. About five minutes later, the Dragons' Idrienne Walker scored the final goal of the game, off a pass from Rachel Sumfest. The Stags were unable to score in the remaining 10 minutes, yielding a 3-0 win for Drexel.
Fairfield's Sarah Wickles took two shots while Julie de Paeuw took one. Rookie Ball had her first collegiate start and played the entire game guarding the net for the Stags. She tallied seven saves while Drexel's Jantien Gunter totaled two.
Fairfield (2-2) will now take action on road. The Stags will face Hofstra on September 10 at 3pm before stopping at Penn on September 12 and Columbia on September 14.
